Industrial Rolling Shutter Security: Avoiding Common Attack Vectors

To secure commercial rolling shutters against crowbar and cutter attacks, standard long-shackle padlocks should be strictly avoided because exposed shackles can be pried or cut. The optimal configuration is either a Circular Disc Lock (e.g., Gifto Disc-90) with a deeply shrouded anti-crop shackle or a 60mm–65mm Squircle padlock (e.g., Gifto Super-60/65) paired with a heavy-duty recessed bottom floor hasp.
1. The Three Primary Rolling Shutter Attack Vectors
Commercial rolling shutters on storefronts, warehouses, and factories represent high-value perimeter targets. Forensic analysis of break-ins reveals three dominant attack vectors:
Crowbar & Lever Prying
A 36-inch crowbar inserted beneath the shutter bottom rail exerts over 1,500 kg of leverage directly onto open padlocks with exposed shackles.
Hydraulic Bolt Croppers
Perimeter shackles with more than 15mm exposed shackle length can be severed by 16-ton portable hydraulic bolt cutters in under 12 seconds.
Cylinder Drilling & Pulling
Economy pin-tumbler locks can be drilled through the plug face. Multi-lever padlocks with anti-drill case hardened shields negate this vector.
2. Disc-90 vs. Super-65: Selecting the Right Mechanism
Depending on your shutter bracket geometry (center bottom bracket vs. side guide hasps), select between these two heavy-duty configurations:
Configuration A: Circular Disc Lock (Gifto Disc-90)
Best For: Center shutter hasps close to the floor. The round body leaves less than 8mm of shackle exposed, making it physically impossible for bolt cropper jaws to gain purchase. The deep laser-welded stainless steel body is naturally weather-resistant.
Configuration B: Squircle Double-Casing (Gifto Super-60 / Super-65)
Best For: Side guide plates and dual floor hasps. Featuring 7 to 8 genuine internal levers and double casing, the squircle profile deflects crowbars and hammer blows while providing exceptional key cycle longevity.
3. Shackle Clearance Calculation Rule
When purchasing padlocks for rolling shutters, follow the Minimum Clearance Rule:
Never buy an oversized long-shackle padlock for a flush floor bracket. Any extra vertical clearance provides an insertion gap for crowbar leverage.
